How this page works

We are a hundred metres from the boardwalk, so we update this page as the heats finish: winners and scores go into the bracket, the status line changes when the morning call is made, and replays go into the videos as the World Surf League posts them. The official wave-by-wave scores are always on the WSL site, linked under each draw.

How the event runs

Men: 24 surfers. Sixteen of them, seeds 9 to 24 including two Filipino wildcards, surf Round 1 head to head. The eight winners meet the top eight seeds in Round 2, then it is quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.

Women: 16 surfers in a straight knockout from Round 1 to the final.

Every heat has two surfers and their best two waves count. Each morning the WSL calls the day ON, OFF or ON HOLD. On ON days competition runs from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, and the Cloud 9 boardwalk out to the tower is closed to spectators. For where to watch, where to surf while the peak is closed and where to sleep, see our visitor guide.
