The OK Surf shop in General Luna, Siargao, with boards racked out front

OK Surf is a surf school, a rental fleet and a shop in General Luna, on the east coast of Siargao Island in the Philippines, a short walk from the Cloud 9 boardwalk. We are a small crew who surf here every day, and we speak English, Chinese and Russian between us. Most of what we do comes down to one job: getting you into the right wave, on the right board, at the right time, and being honest with you about all three.

What we do

Lessons. Our surf school teaches beginners at Jacking Horse and takes progressing surfers to the reefs when they are ready. The standard package is 2,500 PHP, about 45 USD, for two hours in the water with a board, an instructor and free pick-up from any hotel in General Luna. Private sessions, kids lessons, guiding and multi-day surf camps are quoted on request.

Board rental. The fleet runs to hundreds of boards: longboards from 8 to 10 feet including soft-tops, funboards from 6'5" to 8'5", and shortboards from 5'7" to 6'7" from shapers like Pyzel, Lost, Channel Islands and Fire. Rates start at 300 PHP for two hours and drop the longer you keep the board. We match boards to the day's conditions and your actual level, not the level you tell us.

The shop. New and used shortboards and longboards, and custom boards made to order and shipped anywhere in the world in any size, design or material.

Rooms and bikes. We rent a small number of rooms within walking distance of the shop and the boardwalk, booked through Airbnb, and scooters and bikes with surf racks from the counter.

How we work

Every evening at nine we look at the wind, the swell and the tide together and decide where tomorrow's dawn drop-off is going. If you have a lesson or a board booked, you get a message with the plan. If you walk in at six in the morning and ask where to go, you get the same reasoning at the counter, including the answer you might not want: that Cloud 9 is not the wave for you today, that the tide is wrong until eleven, or that the best call is a ninety-minute ride to Pacifico.

We would rather lose a lesson than put someone on a shallow reef they are not ready for. The reef does not grade on effort, and the honest note in our spot guide applies to everyone who walks through the door: almost everyone overestimates their level by one row.

Tip: Come in the evening before your first session, not the morning of. Ten minutes at the counter the night before means the right board is waxed, the pick-up time is set and you are in the water at first light instead of standing in a queue.

The shop as a hangout

The shop is where the day starts and where it ends. People drift in before dawn to check the boardwalk report, drift back mid-morning with coral cuts and stories, and come by in the evening to see what tomorrow looks like on the screen. On flat days we run a landlocked clinic of balance boards, pop-up drills and video review, and point people at the rock pools, the lagoons and the north-coast road. Solo travellers tend to leave with a crew. That is not a service we sell; it is just what happens when a small shop sits three hundred metres from the most famous wave in the country.

Three languages

Siargao gets surfers from everywhere, and a lesson works much better when the instructor and the student share a language. Our team speaks English, Chinese and Russian, and this site is written in all three. Message us on WhatsApp in whichever one you think in; on WeChat our ID is lily_barrel.
