Siargao Surf FAQ

Straight answers on surfing Siargao: beginners, best months, lesson and board rental prices, what to pack, and getting from Sayak Airport to General Luna.

These are the questions we answer most often at the counter, over WhatsApp and in the water: whether Siargao is a good place to learn, when to come, what a lesson or a board costs, what to pack, and how to get from Sayak Airport to General Luna without losing a day. The answers are short and honest, and where a number is involved it is the number we actually charge. For the longer versions read our surf spots guide, the swell season breakdown and the getting to Siargao post. If your question is not here, message us on WhatsApp and we will answer it between sessions.

Surfing in Siargao

Is Siargao good for beginners?

Yes, with the right spot and the right tide. Jacking Horse, next to Cloud 9, has forgiving walls and a bottom that will not take skin off you, and it is where we teach. Cloud 9 itself is a shallow reef break for experienced surfers. Come in the dry season or early in the swell season for the friendliest conditions.

When is the best time to surf Siargao?

August to November is the most consistent stretch, with September and October the sweet spot and November bringing the biggest swells. March to May is smaller and cleaner and the best window for improving surfers. December to February is windier but quiet and often very good at dawn.

Do I need a wetsuit in Siargao?

No. The water sits around 27 to 29 degrees all year. Bring a rash vest or surf shirt for the sun, which is a bigger threat than the water temperature, and reef-safe sunblock.

Should I bring reef booties?

They are a good idea at the rocky spots, especially the boat-access lefts like Stimpy's and Rock Island where the exit is over lava rock, and on any low tide over coral. At Jacking Horse on a mid tide most people go without.

Does Siargao have waves in December?

Yes. December to February is the amihan season: the northeast wind is onshore on the east coast and the swell is bigger and windier, but dawns are often clean, the north and west coasts come into their own, and the island is much quieter.

How crowded is Cloud 9?

It is the busiest lineup in the country, especially in season and at dawn. Jacking Horse and Quicksilver next door are much quieter, and Pacifico on the north coast usually has a fraction of the crowd. During the Philippines Pro the main peak is closed on competition days.
