Stimpy's

Stimpy's is the wave people talk about on the boat back, not the wave they talk about on the way out. It sits on a stretch of coast north of General Luna that you cannot see from the road, and it delivers long, mechanical left-hand walls that keep going long after a Cloud 9 wave would have shut down. Read this page honestly before you book the boat.

The wave

Stimpy's is a left that breaks over a mix of lava rock and coral and behaves more like a point than a reef. The set waves stand up wide of the takeoff spot, form a long, even wall, and run down the line at a speed that rewards a high, committed line. On a clean day the waves look almost identical, which makes it a good place to work on the same turn over and over.

The inside gets hollow and shallow as the wall wraps toward the shoreline. On the right swell direction there is a genuine barrel section down there; on the wrong one it is a quick close-out onto rock. Knowing when to kick out is the whole skill here.

Size range is roughly four to eight feet on the face. Under four feet it tends to be fat and wanders through the section; over eight it is a serious wave with a long paddle back.

When it works

Stimpy's wants east to northeast groundswell with a period of 12 seconds or more. Short-period windswell of the same height does not link the sections.

Tide matters more than at most General Luna spots. Mid tide on the push is the window: enough water over the inside to make the hollow section makeable, not so much that the wave loses its shape. Low tide exposes the rock at the exit and turns the inside into a shut-down. Check the tide on our surf forecast page before you book the boat, not after.

Wind is the same story as the rest of the east coast. The southwest habagat from late May to October blows offshore in the mornings, and August through November is the consistent stretch. In amihan season the north swells can light it up, but the mornings are shorter and the crossing bumpier.

Who it suits

Advanced surfers who are comfortable on fast reef and can hold a line at speed. Our benchmark is simple: if you are surfing Cloud 9 on a proper swell and picking your waves rather than taking what comes, Stimpy's will be the highlight of your trip. If you are still working up to Cloud 9 outside the peak hours, stick to the General Luna reefs for now and come back next season.

Getting there and getting in

Access is by banca from General Luna, roughly an hour each way depending on the boat and the sea state. The boatmen we use know the reef, where to anchor and which entry works on the day's tide; the shoreline is lava rock and the safest way in is not the obvious one.

We do not publish boat prices because they change with group size, fuel and season. Ask us, tell us your dates and how many people, and we will give you a quote and put a boat together. Solo surfers can often join another group with a day's notice.

Leave early. A dawn launch gets you the glassiest window and puts you back in General Luna before the afternoon wind fills in. Bring water and sun protection; there is nothing to buy once you leave the pier.

Board choice

A performance shortboard with a little extra length is the standard call, and a step-up on the bigger days. The wave is fast and long, so you want a board that holds a rail at speed. Bring spare fins and a repair kit.

Etiquette and hazards

The lineup is small and mostly made up of boat groups who have each paid to be there, so the mood is usually relaxed. Keep it that way: take turns, do not paddle straight to the peak on arrival, and give the local surfers who came out with the boats the first pick.

Hazards, in order: the shallow inside on low tide, the rock exit, the current that runs along the reef on bigger swells and pulls you toward the shut-down section, and the long paddle back after a wave you rode too far. Kick out early until you have watched a few sets, wear booties for the rock exit, and clean any cuts the same day.
